There is some construction work going on outside my window. At 7am, they started using a jackhammer. Wanting to regain my strength after the long weekend, I wanted a bit of a sleep-in and tried to ignore it up until 11am when I could bear it no longer and had to get up. At 11.20am they stopped and have not done any further work on the site since.

Welcome to Paris ! Well, actually what you describe is true in a lot of french cities. Anyway, I think this is part of Murphy's laws: it's always when you need to sleep that some stupid guys decides to jackhammering outside your place !
We used to holiday with my Uncle in Strasbourg years ago, prior to his buying a house in a small village nearby. The last year I stayed at his apartment, the landlord was having maintenance work done by a crew of Turkish lads, who started at around 6:30. It mightn't have been so bad except that it was work on the exterior of the house, so they had scaffolding up and could see into all the bedrooms in the house!!!!
